Infinite Dial: Listening to Podcasts and Online Audio Hit New All-Time Highs

"The portion of Americans who listen to any kind of online audio, and the portion who listen to podcasts, have both reached new record highs, according to The Infinite Dial® an annual survey from Edison Research with support from Audacy, Cumulus Media, and SiriusXM Media.

For the last 26 years, Edison Research’s Infinite Dial® has tracked key consumer media and technology usage among the U.S. population. Earlier today, Edison Research Vice President Megan Lazovick presented the latest benchmark data on weekly and monthly podcast consumption, as well as insights into the evolving landscape of online audio listening, AM/FM radio engagement, smart speaker utilization, social media usage, and other digital media behaviors, at the Podcast Movement Evolutions conference in Los Angeles.

Some of the key findings include:
  • Growth in podcast reach is driven by large increases among the number of female listeners:
    • 45% of women in the U.S. age 12+ have listened to a podcast in the last month, up from 39% in 2023, an increase of 15%; 32% of women in the U.S. age 12+ have listened to a podcast in the last week, up from 27% in 2023, an increase of 19%
    • Weekly and monthly podcast listening among men are up 3% and 4%, respectively
    • Increases in the number of monthly and weekly podcast listeners are seen across all age groups

We talk path dependence, critical juncture, and behavioral changes in this Making Sense of Climate episode (audio)

FM #1138 = This is the Franklin Matters radio show, number 1138 in the series.

This session of the radio show shares the output of The Climate Minute podcast episode hosted by Ted McIntyre, Franklin resident and climate activist. We met to record in the Franklin TV & Public Radio studio on Tuesday, January 16, 2024.

The topic thread we talked of as we continued this "making sense of climate" discussion went something like this:

  • Climate Leader Community

  • State pilot to allow gas bans in 10 communities

  • Path dependence

  • Critical juncture

  • Behavioral changes underlying energy revolution/overshoot/planetary management

  • Need for new behavior now

  • End of world? Viewpoints matter.

This discussion continues our journey understanding the MA roadmap toward net zero and while it helps me “make sense of climate”, we hope it helps with your understanding as well.

If you have climate questions or Franklin specific climate questions, send them in and we’ll try to answer them in a future session.

The conversation runs about 54 minutes. Let’s listen to my conversation with Ted.

What I listened to on a podcast, led to my reading the book

While walking around town, I am frequently listening to a book on tape, or to a podcast, or on busy roads, music. One podcast in the regular queue is with Adam Grant.

"Your brain on art" with authors Ivy Ross and Susan Magsamen on the WorkLife with Adam Grant
https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/your-brain-on-art-with-ivy-ross-and-susan-magsamen/id1346314086?i=1000638235681  I don't have an Apple device as the podcast is usually available via multiple podcast apps.

The podcast episode was so good, I went to get the Audible book. The book is much more detailed (of course) and worth it.

Mass. is on track to meet its near-term climate goals, but the hardest work lies ahead | WBUR News

"Massachusetts is legally required to zero-out planet-warming emissions by mid-century, and to get there the state must do several critical things: Replace fossil fuel-powered vehicles and home heating systems with ones that run on electricity; develop more renewable resources like wind and solar; and use nature-based solutions to sequester and store as much carbon as possible.

So how is the state doing on all of this? On Friday, the Healey administration revealed in its first annual climate report card that the state is on track for its 2025 goals.

But, when it comes to meeting the 2030 and 2050 goals, a lot more work (and funding) is needed. And success is far from a sure thing.

“Overall, this report card is an honest assessment of where Massachusetts is and where it needs to go. And it shows that there is a ton of work that needs to happen in a very short period of time,” said Jeremy McDiarmid of Advanced Energy United, a clean energy trade association group."

CommonWealth Beacon: "Let’s be honest about cost, challenges of electrification"

Consider the author's point of view: "Michael S. Giaimo is the director of the northeast region of the American Petroleum Institute

"You may have missed it, but there is a pervasive movement afoot to electrify everything: cars, trucks, buses, homes, offices, stoves, and appliances. It may sound easy, but it is a massive undertaking rife with challenges. Policies seeking to simultaneously electrify our transportation system, our homes, and commercial buildings will require an upfront investment of billions of dollars in preparing and expanding the power grid to accommodate this increased demand for electricity. That is just for starters.

When policymakers discuss this issue, they focus on the perceived benefits of decarbonization but consistently gloss over the process and associated challenges. When they consider mandatory electrification, among the questions they leave unanswered are: How much power is going to be needed to preserve reliability? Where is that power coming from? How is the power going to get where it needs to go? And how much is this all going to cost?

Let’s start with the question about the amount of power needed. According to the 2023–2032 Forecast Report of Capacity, Energy, Loads, and Transmission (CELT Report) – the region’s demand for electrical power is projected to increase by a quarter over the next decade – and that prediction might be understated."

Sharing 2 articles from the rebranded CommonWealth Beacon; Dizoglio audit & Danielle Allen interview

Via CommonWealth Beacon (formerly CommonWealth Magazine):

"Campbell says DiZoglio lacks legal authority to audit Legislature"
"ATTORNEY GENERAL Andrea Campbell notified state Auditor Diana DiZoglio on Thursday evening that the auditor’s office lacks the legal authority to audit the Legislature without its consent.

The decision by Campbell deals a major setback to DiZoglio’s crusade to scrutinize the policies and procedures of the House and Senate chambers where she used to serve, but it doesn’t end it.

In addition to seeking Campbell’s legal opinion on her authority to audit the Legislature, DiZoglio is pursuing a ballot question that would establish a law giving her that power. Campbell, who certified the question as legally suitable to go on the ballot, said in effect that her response to DiZoglio’s request is an interpretation of existing law and is unrelated to the quest for a new law.

“I believe transparency is a cornerstone of good government, but that transparency must be achieved through methods that are consistent with the law,” Campbell said. “As the chief law officer of the Commonwealth, it is my office’s role to determine the legal position of the state by looking at the law as it exists on the books today, and evaluating what that law allows, and what it does not. After a thorough review of the statutory text, pertinent Supreme Judicial Court decisions, and relevant history, we have concluded that current law does not allow an audit of the Legislature over its objection.”

"Danielle Allen says we have work to do on Massachusetts democracy"

"MASSACHUSETTS IS rightly proud of its “revolutionary tradition,” but according to democracy scholar Danielle Allen, the health of the state’s democratic structures isn’t all rosy in practice

“A healthy democracy depends on a couple of critical values,” Allen, a Harvard professor of political philosophy, ethics, and public policy, said on a live episode of The Codcast. “There’s the value of inclusion, really achieving full inclusion, the value of engagement or participation, and then the value of competitiveness. And on each of those dimensions, we can see room for improvement in Massachusetts.”

Allen is focused on what she calls the work of “democratic renovation,” in part through her role as president and founder of Partners in Democracy. The organization pushes for reforms to bolster running for office, voting in elections, and making government systems more transparent. Allen herself made a short-lived bid for governor last year, pushing for many of these reforms."

Wonderful World of Wine (WWW) - Episode 246 - Are You Ready For Some Football.....And Wine?

The Wonderful World of Wine (WWW) - Episode 246 - Exploring All Things Wine With You!

Are You Ready For Some Football.....And Wine?  In episode Kim and Mark talk football food and wine pairings.
Football food is often hearty and flavorful, making it a challenge to pair with wine. However, there are a few key principles to follow to create successful pairings we will discuss:
  • Match the intensity of the food with the intensity of the wine.
  • Consider the acidity of the wine.
  • Think about the complementary flavors of the food and wine. For example, the sweetness of Riesling can balance the heat of buffalo sauce, while the smoky notes of Tempranillo can complement the flavors of grilled meats.
Here are a few foods we will talk pairing wines with:
  • Buffalo wings
  • Nachos
  • Burgers
  • Chips and dips AND more!
With a little planning, you can elevate your football party/tailgating by pairing your favorite foods with the perfect wines.

Cheers and GO PATS!

Healey Administration seeks funds for migrants, Augustus on The Codcast talks housing overall (audio)

"THE HEALEY ADMINISTRATION said it needs another $250 million to keep the emergency shelter program afloat and will probably need additional funds if the number of migrants coming into the state continues to rise.

Under the right to shelter law, Massachusetts is required to provide shelter and support services to homeless families with children and pregnant women. The budget for the current fiscal year, which is less than three months old, appropriated roughly $325 million to provide services to 4,700 families.

With an influx of migrants from other countries and fewer people transitioning out of the program because of a shortage of housing, the number of families participating has grown to more than 6,300 and the $250 million is needed to help cover that extra cost. The $250 million represents a 77 percent increase in funding."

Healey Administration seeks funds for migrants, Augustus on The Codcast talks housing overall (audio)

Also this week on The Codcast the housing issue is discussed:
“I don’t think there’s any silver bullets,” Ed Augustus, who heads up the new Executive Office of Housing and Livable Communities, said on The Codcast. “There’s not one obvious thing that, geez, if you just did this, this would unlock housing production. But I think it’s a series of smaller policy changes, additional funding, and new partnerships and strategies that hopefully collectively help move the needle and get us closer to that 200,000 number.”
